AFS Interkulturelle Begegnungen e.V. is a nonprofit association for youth exchange and intercultural learning. The organization is volunteer-based and is a state-approved carrier of the youth welfare service organization. The aim of AFS is to promote the development of intercultural competence and to support worldwide tolerance and international understanding. The programs developed and implemented by AFS are certified by the United Nations. In addition to the sending and hosting program for students, AFS offers the participation in social, cultural and ecological voluntary services as well as intercultural training programs. Currently, 90 dedicated employees work at the head office in Hamburg and the four regional offices.
Furthermore, almost 4,000 volunteers throughout Germany are actively engaged in the work of AFS. AFS Germany is part of the worldwide AFS-network and cooperates with about 50 independent partners on all continents. A global network of more than 40,000 volunteers is committed to AFS’ objectives. They are involved in the selection, support and preparation of the program participants as well as the proactive development of the association’s strategy or carry out other tasks at the local, regional and national levels. The association is financed by participation fees, membership fees, donations, foundation
grants and public funds.
